SOCINE, (for Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos de Cinema e Audiovisual - The Brazilian Society of Cinema and Audiovisual Studies) was established in November 1996 purporting to promote research and exchange of information in the field of cinema and audiovisual aids. Such forms of expression, when incentivated, promote the reflection and the sharing of ideas regarding cinema and audiovisual in Brazil. At present, SOCINE comprises 364 members, most of whom are professors and graduate and post graduate students who represent 18 Brazilian universities..

The annual meetings SOCINE promotes have become the most important event for the dissemination and debate about the most recent research investigating manifestations of the movie phenomenon and related areas. The annual meeting is also part of the effort this entity has made to foment concrete interaction opportunities among professionals, reviewers, researchers, professors and students in the field of audiovisual aids from the different regions of the country.

In this regard, it is of utmost importance that the SOCINE publication is circulated annually containing selective editorial criteria that leads to a reliable representation of the works that are presented during the meeting. Nine editions of this event have been held and these relied on the backing of institutional agencies for the support of research, namely Capes, CNPq, and FAPESP.

SOCINE also promotes debate about audiovisual education within Brazil. In this task, the entity works hand-in-hand with FORCINE, (for Fórum Brasileiro de Ensino de Cinema e Audiovisual -Brazilian Forum for Cinema and Audiovisual Education) as well as with COMPÓS, the national association of post-graduate communications programs, to establish the policies in the field of audiovisual education at fomentation agencies like Capes and CNPq.

The structure at SOCINE is comprised of a board of directors, a 17-member deliberative board, and a 3-person board of fiscal advisors all elected for 2-year terms. SOCINE also relies on a 6-member scientific committee that offers its support in the definition of policies.
